There are many ways to collect data using Pocket PCs
Pocket PCs continue to get cheaper, faster and smarter with their capabilities. The devices can store large amounts of data and are programmable to do almost any kind of task. Many of our clients have used our Pocket Tech software to collect data in the field and then sync up with a SQL Server database in the office.
Is your company ready for a Pocket PC program?
First ask yourself, is the amount of data being collected small or large? A 10 page questionnaire will not work for a Pocket PC program. Knowing the type of data being collected is also important; can it be gathered by using check boxes and drop down lists? If the information being harvested requires a lot of custom notes, it can be difficult to collect it on a Pocket PC (just ask anyone who has tried typing a long email on one of them).
The environment will also play a role. For example, using a Pocket PC to collect QC data on a production line that requires quick decisions may not be optimal.
Leverage SQL Server with the Pocket PC
The real power of a Pocket PC solution is realized when the data is uploaded to a central database for analysis and processing. Every application we have designed has used SQL Server technology as the database backend which allows our customers to collect data and then process it at a later time. Don't have SQL Server? We can also use the Microsoft Desktop Database Engine (MSDE).

Safety Inspections: Use the Pocket PC on large job sites to document safety violations. Once uploaded to SQL Server, the violations can then be assigned to other departments for corrections and follow up.
Engineering Work Order Management: Supervisors assign work orders from a central database, which are then downloaded to technicians Pocket PC for execution.
Pipe Tracking: Track the placement of pipes for easy "built as" reporting. Perform pipe inspections prior to welding, during the welding phase and notate final placement of pipes.
Quality Control: Log quality inspections that are then uploaded to a central database for reporting and analysis.
